Emmitsburg, MD – Mount St.Mary's received four goals from Jen Semler and three goals from Esther Rufolo and used a 7-0 run that bridged the first and second halves in recording a 13-4 Northeast Conference (NEC) victory over Wagner at sun-splashed Waldron Family Stadium.
The Seahawks were spearheaded offensively by a two-goal, one assist performance turned in by freshman attack
Leea Sinay (Marcellus, Ny/ Marcellus). Junior defender
Denieda McCullough (Freeport, NY/ Freeport) scored one goal and assisted on another while sophomore midfielder
Melanie Gorman (Medford, NJ/ Shawnee) added one goal for the Seahawks. Freshman
Morgan Roach (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) recorded nine saves in goal for Wagner.
Wagner took an early 2-1 lead on a McCullough goal off a feed from Sinay with 21:17 remaining in the first half. The Mountaineers then embarked on a 4-0 run to build a 5-2 lead en route to an 8-3 lead at intermission. Mount St. Mary's closed the first half on a 3-0 run and then opened the second half on a 4-0 splurge in seizing a commanding 12-3 lead.
Mount St. Mary's out-shot Wagner 20-13, held a 20-10 edge in ground balls and won 13-of-19 draw controls. The Mountaineers were particularly effective on free position shots, sinking 4-of-11 FPO's while Wagner was 0-of-2 in this category. Brigid McTavish had five saves in goal for the Mount while playing the first 53 minutes of the game before yielding to Sarah Jane Leder who saved one shot during her seven-minute stint.
This was a physical contest that featured the issuance of three yellow cards. Picking up yellow cards for the Seahawks were sophomore attack Annie O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) and junior defender
Chanel Briggins (Freeport, NY/ Freeport) while Allie Fife received a yellow card for the Mountaineers.
With the loss, Wagner falls to 2-8 on the season, 1-2 in the NEC while the Mount Improves to 5-7 overall and a perfect 4-0 in league play.
The Seahawks are next in action on Friday, April 8 when Wagner plays host to the Colonials of Robert Morris. First Draw is set for 4:00 pm.
