Beck Leads Third-Seeded Water Polo Into MAAC Championships While Leading Nation In Steals

Junior Chelsea Beck
Staten Island, NY– The Wagner College water polo team ended the regular season with a record of 16-14, including a 5-5 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) after dropping an 11-6 decision to Iona before defeating Villanova 15-8 in the season finale this past weekend. The Seahawks' 5-5 record earned them the three seed in this upcoming weekend's MAAC Championship Tournament in Poughkeepsie, NY, where Wagner will meet the defending champion Marist College Red Foxes at 3:00 pm.

Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson) posted a career-high 11 steals this past weekend as the junior became the all-time steals leader in program history with a total of 180 career steals. The Keystone State native also currently holds the top spot on the National 50 Leaderboard with 99 steals on the season, 12 ahead of Hartwick's Charlotte Mensink.

Starting off the weekend vs. the undefeated Gaels of Iona College, Wagner struggled to find the net early as Iona led after the first quarter 4-2. Wagner trailed by a 6-3 count at halftime. Out of the huddle, the Seahawk offense managed to knock in three goals while the Gaels answered back with a tree-goal run of their own. With Wagner unable to capitalize in the final quarter, Iona remained undefeated as they came out with the 11-6 victory.

Highlighting the Wagner defense, Beck amassed a season-high eight steals and recorded two goals while Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA / Governor Mifflin) led the offense with three points on the strength of two goals and one assist. The senior co-captain also totaled five steals on the afternoon.

Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) and Carina Giles (Mohton, PA / Governor Mifflin) each totaled two points on one goal and one assist while Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) fed two assists.

In the second game of the day, Wagner toppled the Wildcats of Villanova as the Seahawks held onto their third third-place standing. Nine Seahawks scored in the 15-8 regular season finale victory.

Leading 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, Wagner went on a 5-1 scoring run in the second as the Seahawks held a comfortable 7-2 lead heading into the half. Holding the Wildcats to just two goals in the third, Wagner increased its goal margin by knocking in three more tallies, putting the Seahawks out in front by a 10-4 margin. Sending five more into the net in the final quarter, the Seahawks allowed Villanova four late goals but it was a case of too little, too late as Wagner captured the 15-8 win.

Leading the scoring for Wagner, junior Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) notched a personal-best six points while amassing a career-high four goals and two assists as Vanderbent also tacked on a season-high six points with one goal, five assists to go with three steals.

Beck knocked in two goals and one assist as the junior finished the regular season as the team's leading scorer with 61 goals and 50 assists for a team-high 111 points in addition to her 99 steals, which leads the nation.

Hannings registered two goals and one assist in victory as classmate and former high school teammate Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) knocked in a pair of goals.

Giles and Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA / Souderton Area), along with sophomore Leslie Poole (Downey, CA / Warren) added one goal apiece.

The rookie class had a strong game as Sidney Hoshko (Coronado, CA / Coronado) sent two between the pipes and Stacy McGregor (Sinking Spring, PA / Wilson) recorded a season-high three steals.
