Brooklyn Heights, NY – Coming off an exciting 10-8 overtime victory over St. Francis (NY) earlier in the day, the Wagner water polo team finished Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action Sunday 1-1 following a 10-7 loss to Marist.
After an early goal from Marist's Agnes Konopka, Wagner's
Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA / Governor Mifflin) and
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson) went on a three goal run with Vanderbent knocking in two and Beck sending one into the net. The Red Foxes were able to capitalize two more times as the score was tied 3-3 after the first quarter.
In the second, Konopka along with Kelly Kline combined for three goals for the Red Foxes while Wagner's
Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) sent one between the pipes to draw to within 6-4 at the half.
Both teams managed to score twice in the third quarter as
Carina Giles (Mohton, PA / Governor Mifflin) and
Sidney Hoshko (Coronado, CA / Coronado) each added a goal to keep Wagner within touch at 8-6.
Marist opened the fourth quarter with consecutive gols which gave the defending MAAC champions a 10-6 lead. Rookie
Kaylee Ginnane (Tampa, FL / Coronado, CA) found the back of the net but that is as close as the Seahawks would get as Marist held on for the 10-7 win.
The Seahawks,who currently sit in third place in the MAAC, conclude regular season play on April 23 as they look to get their first 2011 victory over Iona at 10:00 a.m. before defending their undefeated record vs. Villanova at 5:30 p.m..
