Brooklyn Heights, NY – Seven Seahawks combined for 10 goals lifting the Wagner College Water Polo team (15-12, 4-3 MAAC) to a 10-8 overtime victory over the Terriers of St. Francis (NY).
In capturing their fourth Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win, the Seahawks currently stand in third place in the MAAC.
Leading 2-1 after the first quarter with goals from
Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA / Governor Mifflin and
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson), the Seahawks were able to maintain the momentum as Beck knocked in two more and
Sidney Hoshko (Coronado, CA / Coronado) placed one between the pipes making the halftime score 5-3.
Wagner's two-goal lead remained intact as both teams added on two goals apiece as the Seahawks headed into the final quarter on top by a 7-5 margin.
The last eight minutes began with
Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) sailing one past the Terrier defense and into the net which put the Seahawks up by an 8-5 count. The Terriers answered with two goals of their own to draw to within one goal at 8-7. With 47 seconds remaining in the game, St. Francis's Thalita Paladino placed the tying goal in the back of net. The Seahawks were unable to capitalize in the remaining seconds as the game was sent into overtime.
Early in the first overtime half, junior
Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) put Wagner up by one while sophomore goalkeeper
Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) was able to shut out the Terrier's attack.
While the Terriers remained scoreless in the second overtime,
Carina Giles (Mohton, PA / Governor Mifflin) added one more to the scorebook, giving Wagner the 10-8 victory.
