Water Polo Suffers 14-12 Loss To Iona

New Rochelle, NY – The Wagner College water polo team (14-12, 3-3 MAAC) suffered a heartbreaking 14-12 loss to Iona after the Gaels knocked in eight goals in the second half for the come-from -behind victory. The loss left the Seahawks winless on Saturday after they fell 11-9 earlier in the day to Siena.

Finishing the first quarter on top 4-3, Wagner widened the gap as the Seahawks amassed five more goals and held the Gaels to just three in taking a 9-6 lead into halftime. Iona went on a 5-2 run at the outset of the second half, leaving the scored tied at 11-11 heading into the final quarter. Wagner's lone fourth quarter goal wasn't enough to pull out the victory as Iona's powerful second half proved too much for the Seahawks as they fell 14-12.

Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson) led the Seahawks in scoring as the junior placed four between the pipes and tallied one assist. The Keystone State native also accumulated one steal, one field block and drew one exclusion.

Senior Carina Giles (Mohton, PA / Governor Mifflin) totaled seven points in the match with two goals and a team-high five assists while also adding two steals, one field block and one drawn exclusion.

Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) tallied two goals and a game-high three drawn exclusions as Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA / North Penn), Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA / Governor Mifflin), Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) and Stacy McGregor (Sinking Spring, PA / Wilson) each knocked in one goal.

Sophomore goalie Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) had seven saves and a career-high eight steals.

The Seahawks continue conference play tomorrow as they take on St. Francis (NY) at noon and Marist at 3:00 p.m.
