New Rochelle, NY – The Wagner College water polo team (14-11, 3-2 MAAC) suffered its second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) loss of the season as the Saints of Siena College outscored the Seahawks 11-9.
Following an impressive 12-7 win over the Siena last weekend, Wagner was unable to overcome a two-point deficit set late in the third quarter. Leading 4-3 at the end of the first quarter, the Seahawks failed to capitalize in the second as Siena managed to place two between the pipes. After the half, Wagner knocked in three goals while the Saints answered back with four. Trailing 9-7 heading into the final eight minutes, Siena's two-goal lead held strong as the teams scored two goals apiece, ending the match in an 11-9 loss for the Seahawks.
Combining for six goals, classmates
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson) and
Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) led the team with three goals and one assist apiece. As the top two scorers on the 2011 squad, the junior duo has accumulated over a third of the season's total goals with 94. Beck also registered a team-best six steals while French recorded a game-high eight drawn exclusions
Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) amassed five points as the junior scored one goal in addition to a team-leading four assists. Also scoring for the Seahawks were seniors
Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA / Souderton Area) and
Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA / Governor Mifflin) who each added one goal apiece.
In goal, sophomore
Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) had seven blocks, four steals and one save.
