Men's Tennis Drops Pair Of Matches To St. Francis (NY) And Fordham

The Wagner men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches over the last week to St. Francis (NY) and Fordham by scores of 5-2 and 6-1, respectively. WIth the losses, the Seahawks fall to 0-10 and 0-2 in the Northeast Conference (NEC).

Against the Terriers in the Green & White's lone home match of the spring season, freshman Danil Ovechkin (Staten Island, NY / Pendleton School (FL)) led the way in recording his first career singles and doubles victory. Ovechkin bested Tita Mba by a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 count before teaming with classmate David Garzon (Guttenberg, NJ / Memorial) for an easy 8-4 win over Mba and Danhaldi Robinson at No. 1 doubles.

Also posting a win during singles play was senior Yirmeyah Beckles (Cincinnati, OH / Aquinas College), who was victorious in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 over Edward Alontaga at No. 4 singles. 

At Fordham, Garzon won his first collegiate singles match by a 6-4, 7-5 count at the No. 2 spot. Ovechkin was turned away at No. 1 singles by the narrowest of margins. After winning the first set 6-4, he lost the second 6-2 before losing in the winner-take-all third set 11-9.

Wagner returns to action on Saturday, April 2 with a pair of matches against Saint Francis (PA) and St. Francis (NY) in Loretto, PA.
