Trailing by three with 2:50 to play following DeShawn Dockery's free throw, Wagner appeared to be running out of gas after missing a pair of lay-ups. Junior
Chris Martin (Sicklerville, NJ / Apex Academies), however, forced Kamil Svrdlik into a turnover and passed the ball to junior
Tyler Murray (Toronto, Ontario / Eastern Commerce), who found Rivers on the left side. The rookie guard
took a dribble before hitting the shot and drawing John Galvin's fifth foul. Rivers, who is the fourth-ranked free throw shooter in the nation, then drilled his first free throw of the night, tying the game up at 55-55 with 2:09 to play.
Mike Scott then gave the visitors the lead at 57-55 on the ensuing possession, hitting a driving lay-up with just 1:46 to play. Wagner then missed a pair of shots and looked to be in trouble before sophomore
Josh Thompson (Richland, NJ / St. Augustine Prep) split a pair from the line, cutting the lead to one with 59 seconds to play. Terrence Grier then turned the ball over and
Murray again found Rivers the eventual go-ahead three-point play, making it 59-57 with just 33 seconds on the clock, following the free throw. FDU turned the ball over on the following possession and Murray sank a pair from the line, giving the Green & White the 61-57 come-from-behind win.
Rivers notched eight of his 11 points in the final 3:46 while spearheading a game-ending 11-3 run and after going scoreless in the first half. The first-year standout also had a team-best five assists over 33 minutes. Murray scored an even 20 points, hitting at least 20 for a team-best ninth time on the year, while recording four assists, two steals and just one turnover. Thompson matched Rivers with 11 big points off the bench while notching a team-best seven rebounds and a career-best four steals over 24 minutes. Freshman
Naofall Folahan (Benin Republic (West Africa) / Wilbraham and Monson Academy (MA)) hit for double-figures for the fourth time on the year with 10 points, on 5-of-9 shooting, with six rebounds and a pair of blocks. He scored eight of his 10 points after halftime -
highlighted by this monster dunk - and is now averaging 9.3 ppg on 66.7 percent (8-12) shooting over the last three games.
Wagner won despite leading for only 6:45 - including just the final 33 seconds of the second half - and was victorious for the first time this season in seven games when converting five three pointers or less (4-13) (.308). The Seahawks did notch double-digits in steals (10) for just the second time this year while pressuring the Knights into 21 miscues - leading to a 26-13 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Green & White also collected its NEC-leading eighth win of the year in games decided by five points or less while improving to 8-4 (5-2 NEC) in five-point contests. FDU, conversely, falls to 2-5 (1-3 NEC) in similar situations and have lost six-straight games and 15-of-16 since starting out league play 2-0.
Wagner shot just 35.9 percent (23-64) from the floor and 64.7 percent (11-17) from the line, but did convert 5-of-6 from the charity stripe over the final 2:09. The Knights, meanwhile were not much better, making good on 38.0 percent (19-50) from the floor and 25.0 percent (3-12) from beyond the arc, but managed to hit on 72.7 percent (16-22) from the line. FDU won the battle of the boards by a 45-32 count and managed to hold onto the lead for most of the game thanks to an 11-6 advantage in fast-break points.
Svrdlik led the way on offense for the Knights with 18 points, highlighted by 10-of-11 shooting from the line, with six rebounds and three blocks in 30 minutes. Scott, a preseason All-NEC pick, added 13 points, eight rebounds and a game-high seven assists while playing 39 minutes. Grier rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points. Galvin, who averaged 22.0 ppg and 13.0 rpg last week against LIU and St. Francis (NY), was harrassed into just 1-of-5 shooting while finishing just with just four points and nine rebounds before fouling out late in the game.
FDU dictated the game flow for most of the night, assuming a 34-27 halftime lead thanks to converting 80.0 percent (12-15) from the line in the opening half while Wagner was just 50.0 percent (3-6).
The Knights pushed their lead out to nine on a pair of occasions after halftime but could not put any more distance between themselves and the Seahawks. The Green & White continued to fight, pressuring the visitors into just 33.3 percent shooting (9-27) and 11 miscues - leading to a 16-4 advantage in points off turnovers - in the decisive second half.
Wagner returns to action on Saturday, February 5 at 7:00 pm when the Seahawks host Monmouth in the Spiro Sports Center.
