Piscataway, NJ – The Seahawks' women's swimming and diving team dropped its first dual meet of the year today, falling to Big East powerhouse, Rutgers, 165-121, at the Rutgers Aquatics Center. The blemish moves Wagner to just 5-1 overall, while the Scarlet Knights remain perfect with a 4-0 record.
Wagner sophomore
Alexandra Cooney (Port Jervis, NY / Minisink Valley) continued her dominance in the 500 freestyle, winning the event for the third time this season in a time of 5:11.98. Teammates
Kristiana Kalibat (Princeton, NJ / Princeton High) and
Mary Courtney Ryan (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph Hill Academy) joined Cooney on the podium, as Kalibat finished in second place in 5:20.67, while Ryan took third with a time of 5:31.93.
The Seahawks breaststroke specialists team up for a sweep of the 200 meter event, with
Kelsey Thomas (Hammonton, NJ / Holy Spirit) taking first in 2:29.90, followed by
Kristen Lee (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East), who finished in 2:36.56, and
Patricia Gavin (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech), who took third in 2:39.82.
Sophomore
Meredith Ketchmark (Plainsboro, NJ / West Windsor-Plainsboro) earned first place points in the 100 butterfly event, cruising in at 1:00.50, as junior
Tatum Colitz (Wyomissing, PA / Wilson) garnered second place and freshman
Lynn Tay (Elk Grove, CA / Bradshaw Christian) finished third.
Fellow first-year
Morgan Stoner (Greensburg, PA / Hempfield Area Senior) picked up a first place finish of her own in the 200 individual medley, finishing the heat in 2:15.70, while Thomas earned second place points in a time of 2:17.13, and senior co-captain
Lauren Meyer (Hamden, CT / Hamden HS) came in third place in 2:21.81.
The Wagner divers were also on display against the Scarlet Knights, with freshman
Mallory Lee (Newark, CA / Moreau Catholic) leading the way on both the one and three-meter boards, earning a fourth place finish on the three-meter, and a fifth place on the one. Her score of 218.69 on the three-meter board, snapped her own school record of 175.95. Teammates
Josephine Ieraci (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) and
Marikate Villano (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire) placed just behind Lee, with Ieraci finishing in fifth place on the three-meter board and seventh on the one, and Villano taking two sixth place finishes on her boards.
The Seahawks will be back in action next weekend, when they travel to Manhattan College for a four-team meet against the Jaspers, Hunter College and St. Joseph's (NY). That meet is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
