Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team lost a hard-fought battle against Northeast Conference (NEC) foe Robert Morris today, 1-0, at Wagner Stadium. The loss drops the Seahawks to 9-7-2 and 3-6-0 in the NEC, while the Colonials improve to 11-7-1 overall and 5-4-0 in league play.
It was an evenly played first half, with Wagner leading in the shots category, 5-2. Each team had their own scoring chances, but keepers, Jessica Olin and Wagner's
Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) kept the game scoreless with five saves between the two.
The Seahawks looked to strike early in the second half, putting immediate pressure on the Colonials backline. Junior
Alyssa Grecco (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) led the Wagner attack in the first minute of the frame, blasting strong a shot from 25-yards out, forcing Olin to make a key save. Just eight minutes later, Grecco would again test Olin on another deep shot, but Olin was in position to handle any threat.
Robert Morris broke the scoreless tie in the 57
th minute after Katie Austin played knocked a loose ball around the 18-yard box, before it was picked up by Brianna Bell and placed into the left side of the cage for her fourth goal of the year.
Wagner kept the pressure on as the clocked ticked down, as the duo of
Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) and
Jackie Nicholas (Rockville Centre, NY / South Side) tested Olin and her defensive core, but were unable to get anything by.
Marcy ended the game with seven saves for the Green & White, while Olin recorded eight in the Colonial win.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Sunday, October 30, when they host Saint Francis (PA) in their final home game of the regular season. Prior to the 12:00 p.m. kickoff, Wagner will honor seniors
Terryn Marette (Chevy Chase, MD / Bethesda-Chevy Chase),
Kaitlyn Llewellyn (Island Lake, IL / Wauconda) and
Jen Emigholz (Staten Island, NY / Moore Catholic), who will be playing in their final home game of their college careers.
