Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) scored the game's lone goal in the final minutes of the first half to lift the Wagner women's soccer team past Mount St. Mary's, 1-0, for its first Northeast Conference (NEC) win of the year.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 7-2-2 overall, and 1-1-0 in NEC play. The loss drops the Mount to 3-5-2, and 1-1-0 in the conference.
The Seahawks came out blazing in the first half, recording three shots and two corner kicks within the first five minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper
Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) denied The Mount's leading scorer, Sadie Winship, of her third goal of the year in the 39
th minute as the Green & White piled on the chances offensively.
Wagner outshot the Mountaineers, 6-4, in the first 41 minutes, before Vigliotti broke the scoreless tie. The third-year striker notched her third goal of the year on an assist from freshman
Sydney McCarthy (Canton, GA / Woodstock) who tallied her second helper of the season, as the teams went into the halftime break.
Wagner's offensive prowess remained strong in the second half, outshooting the Mountaineers 4-1, as
Alyssa Grecco (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy),
Katie Keown (Morris Plains, NJ / Morristown),
Monica Zurich (Montvale, NJ / Pascack Hills) and McCarthy each tested Alicia Miller.
With the Seahawk defense holding strong, Marcy was forced to make just one save in the second half, sealing her league-leading sixth shutout of the year. Miller made four saves in the loss for the Mount.
Wagner will be in action next on Tuesday, October 4, when the Seahawks play a make-up game at Monmouth at 7:00 p.m.
