Box Score
New Britian, CT – A late goal by Allison Kelley gave the Central Connecticut State women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Wagner, as the Seahawks fall to 2-4 in Northeast Conference play, and 8-5-2 overall. The Blue Devils picked up their first NEC win of the year with the victory, moving to 1-2-3 in the league, and 4-4-5 overall.
The two teams were evenly matched through the first half with Wagner edging out a 6-4 shot advantage. The Blue Devils keeper, Nikola Deiter, kept the slate clean, denying seniors
Terryn Marette (Chevy Chase, MD / Chevy Chase) and
Kaitlyn Llewellyn (Island Lake, IL / Wauconda) of their bids. Wagner goalie
Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) made just one stop in the first 45 minutes for the Seahawks, as the team's entered the halftime break scoreless.
The home team came out firing in the second half, putting more pressure on the Seahawks backline. As each team tallied up a couple of scoring chances, the Blue and White cracked the scoreboard as time dwindled down. In the 81
st minute of play, sophomore Allison Kelley beat a Wagner defender and sliced her shot into the upper right corner of the net to record her second goal of the year.
Wagner freshman
Alyssa Azzinaro (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) entered the game just after the CCSU goal, and immediately tested the Blue Devils defense. The first-year forward was able to get two shots off in the final few minutes of the game, but was unable to convert, as CCSU snapped its five-game winless streak.
Marcy ended the day making just two saves for the Seahawks, while Deiter recorded four in the Blue Devil win.
The Seahawks will travel to Quinnipiac on Sunday, for their final NEC road game of the regular season. Wagner concludes the 2011 season with a three-game homestand beginning October 21.
NOTE: There was a 30 minute delay after the start of the game due to lightning in the area.
