Early Goal Lifts Broncs Past Wagner, 1-0

Box Score

Staten Island, NY –
An early goal by the visiting Broncs lifts Rider past Wagner, 1-0 in today's non-conference matchup at Wagner Stadium.

The physical battle started from the opening kick-off, each team earning free kicks toward their opponent's nets. The Broncs got on the board first when Abi Cottam flicked a ball over a Wagner defender to an on-running Jody Sokol. Sokol took one touch on the ball, and then rifled a shot into the upper left hand corner, giving Rider an early 1-0 lead.

The visiting Broncs took their one goal lead into the locker room, having outshot the Green and White 7-4 after the first 45 minutes.

The Seahawks came out in the second half with a bit more composure, possessing the ball with greater ease in the midfield. Wagner's ball control almost paid off in the 52nd minute, after sophomore Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY) played a long through ball in between two defenders that sprung fellow forward Briana Vassallo (Saddle Brook, NJ) on a breakaway. With not much of a shooting angle coming down the right side, the senior blasted a shot on net, but was denied by Rider goalie Alex Post.

Wagner had another quality scoring opportunity at the end of the half off a Terryn Marette (Chevy Chase, MD) corner kick, but again, Post was up to the task. Post ended the game with five saves, while Seahawks goalie Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY) finished with seven on the day.

With the loss, the Seahawks now fall to 4-4-0 on the year, while Rider improves to 3-2-2.

Wagner will take to the pitch for their second game of the weekend on Sunday, September 19, when the team travels down to Delaware State for a 1:00 pm start.
