Piscataway, NJ – The Wagner men's golf team opened up its fall season at the Rutgers Invitational, finishing 17th on the weekend with scores of 321-327-315, for a 963 in the 54-hole competition. Newberry College came in first place, shooting five-under on the weekend, with a combined score of 847.
The Seahawks were led by freshman
Jason Hopkins (Menifee, CA) and junior
Steve Nakajima (Delta British Columbia, Canada), who shot plus 23, and plus 24 respectively. Hopkins shot a final-day score of 73 to post a team low on the weekend.
Freshmen
Tommy Arison (Fairlawn, OH) and
Eric Mathias (Martinsburg, WV), along with
Jan Saroch rounded out the five-man roster. Arison and Saroch shot a 54-hole score of 247, while Mathias posted a 253.
“Overall, I am pretty pleased with the poise our four first year golfers showed today,” said assistant coach
Christopher Fourman. “It's pretty nerve wracking to play in your first collegiate event and they were playing with some of the better schools in the Northeast.”
The Seahawks will head to the Monmouth Invitational on Thursday, September 23, for their next fall season competition.
