Lauren French (Shillington, PA/North Penn) and junior
Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) were not enough as the Wagner College Water Polo team (15-18, 5-3 MAAC) fell 13-12 to the Iona College Gaels. The Seahawks finished Saturday's doubleheader 1-1 with a win earlier today over Siena College.
The Gaels took the early lead with a 4-3 run in the first quarter. The Seahawks matched goals in the second period, 2-2, to narrow Iona's lead to 6-5 at halftime. Wagner tied the game at 9-9 in the third quarter with a 4-3 run, but Iona bounced back in the final frame, outscoring the Seahawks 4-3 for the 13-12 final.
French and Pyrz led the team in scoring with three goals apiece. French also added an assist for four total points. She finished the day with a team-best seven goals scored and has found the back of the net in eight consecutive games. French has registered 24 of her team-leading 52 goals against Conference opponents.
Pyrz finished with her eighth multi-goal game of the season. For the day, she had four goals and an assist and currently stands fourth in goals scored (34) and first in assists (38). Pyrz is one point away from 100 career total points.
Junior
Carina Giles (Mohton, PA/Governor Mifflin) became the fourth player this season to cross the 100 career point mark on Saturday. Giles had a goal and two assists against Iona and an assist versus Siena to improve her career marks to 47 goals and 53 assists.
Sophomore
Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) continued her hot streak in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader – registering two goals and three assists. She finished the day with nine total points.
Also scoring for the Seahawks was freshman
Leslie Poole (Downey, CA/Warren) and sophomore
Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA/North Penn). Robinson also finished with an assist in the game.
Senior goalie
Kelsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon/Fullerton JC) extended her double-digit save streak to 14 straight games with 17 stops. She averaged 19.5 saves in two games on Saturday.
Wagner concludes the regular season on Sunday with two contests in the Spiro Sports Center. The Seahawks are scheduled to play St. Francis (NY) at 12:30 PM and Marist College at 4:30 PM. Recaps will be available at the end of the day.
