French Nets Five in 11-6 Win over Villanova

Sophomore Lauren French
Loudonville, NY – Sophomore Lauren French (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) posted a career-high five goals and an assist in the Seahawks' thrashing of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Villanova University on Saturday. French led the charge as seven different members of the Wagner College Water Polo team (12-16, 2-1 MAAC) found the back of the net in the 11-6 victory.

The Seahawks never trailed after taking a 2-1 lead in the first quarter. A 5-1 run in the second period served to cushion a comfortable 7-2 lead at halftime. The Wildcats did outscore the Seahawks in the third period, 3-2, but a 2-1 Wagner run in the final frame cemented the 11-6 win.

French led all scorers with five goals and an assist for six total points. Her five goals scored in a single game is a new career-best for the second year center. She had previously scored four goals in a game twice – once against Villanova on April 18th 2009, and again against Whittier on March 7th of this season. French crossed the 100-career point mark in the game. She now has 104 career points on 62 goals and 42 assists.

Seven other Seahawks, Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson), Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), Katie Jordan (Westlake Village, CA/Agoura), Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area), Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin), and Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), each tallied one goal apiece.

Pyrz led the way for the Seahawks in assists with four helpers. Not far behind was classmate Vanderbent with three assists. Beck, Robinson, French, and freshman Leslie Poole (Downey, CA/North Penn) also added an assist in the game.

Vanderbent has scored in three of the last four games – she currently leads the team with 39 markers. Beck remains in second place with 37 while French's impressive performance moves her to third on the team with 36 markers.

Senior goalie Kelsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon/Fullerton JC) added to her impressive season with 19 saves in her 20th double-digit save game of the season. She has registered double-digit saves in eight straight games.

The Seahawks have one game remaining today against Iona College at 5:30 PM
