Water Polo Suffers Overtime Defeat to Harvard

Junior Carina Giles
Princeton, NJ – The Wagner College Water Polo team (3-3, 0-0 MAAC) suffered their third loss of the season against the Harvard University Crimson in overtime, 10-8. With the loss, Wagner's program falls to 4-4 lifetime against Harvard.

Wagner held a 5-1 lead after the first quarter but stumbled in the second period, being outscored 3-0 to hold a slim, one-goal advantage heading into the second half. In the third period, the Seahawks struck three more times while allowing one goal to the Crimson to take an 8-6 lead. The fourth quarter spelt disaster for the Green and White, however, as Harvard tied the game with two late goals and tacked on two more scores in overtime for the win.

Six different Seahawks scored in defeat, including junior Carina Giles (Mohton, PA/Governor Mifflin) who added to her weekend total with two goals. Giles, who tallied two scores in Wagner's earlier win against Gannon University, has seven goals this season. Also, finding the back of the net for the Seahawks was the reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Offensive Player of the Week Lauren French (Shillington, PA/North Penn). Both French and Giles have at least one goal in five straight games.

Sophomore Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson) continued her scoring spree, adding another goal to her team leading nine tallies. Junior Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area), junior Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin), and sophomore Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) joined Beck and French with a goal apiece. For Vanderbent, her third goal of the season stands as her 35th career marker.

The Seahawks return to action tomorrow when they play the University of Michigan at 12:40 PM and Hartwick College at 5:20 PM. Michigan and Hartwick rank fifth and 12th respectively in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's poll of the 2010 Varsity Top 20.
