Princeton, NJ – The Wagner College Water Polo team (3-2, 0-0 MAAC) collected 13 goals on their way to a nine-point victory over the Gannon University Golden Knights. The offensive explosion for the Seahawks marks the most goals scored in a single game this season and the most since Wagner's 16-5 win over Villanova on April 18th, 2009.
The Wagner women never trailed – taking an early 3-1 lead after the first quarter. The Seahawks added five goals in second period to open up their largest halftime lead of the season, 8-3. In the second half Wagner's top ranked defensive stiffened, outscoring the Golden Knights 5-1 over the final two frames.
On offense Wagner's leading goal scorer, sophomore
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson), tied a career-high with three scores. Beck last scored three goals in a game in Wagner's 7-5 win over Iona College on April 18th of her rookie season.
Four Seahawks added two goals each, including junior
Carina Giles (Mohton, PA/Governor Mifflin), sophomore
Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), sophomore
Lauren Lovallo (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), and the reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Offensive Player of the Week
Lauren French (Shillington, PA/North Penn).
For French and Giles, who have combined for 11 goals this season, Saturday's win was the fourth straight game in which both have found the back of the net, while Hannings has at least one goal in each of the last three games. Lovallo, who made the transition from goalie to center in her second season, matched her career total with two goals scored.
Two other Seahawks, juniors
Dana DeCinque (Collegeville, PA/The Hill School) and
Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area), each tacked on a goal apiece. For DeCinque the score was her first this season.
Wagner's next game is at 5:20 PM against Harvard University
