Staten Island, NY - Featuring a roster with seven newcomers among their eight student-athletes, the Wagner men's tennis team put up a strong fight in a 7-0 loss to Lafayette in the season opener for the Green & White at the Wagner College Tennis Courts.

In singles action, freshman Taylor Santoro (Absecon, NJ / St. Augustine Prep) lost to Justin Haar in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. Scott Gelbman blanked junior Yirmeyah Beckles (Cincinnati, OH / Aquinas College) at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0. At third singles, graduate student Nick Lezoli (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) lost to James Murphy 6-2, 6-2. At No. 4 singles, freshman Pierre Yuzon (Bakersfield, CA / Centennial) was felled 6-1, 6-0 by Andrew Morris. In fifth singles, sophomore Nick Apicella (Peekskill, NY / Peekskill) dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to James St. Orge. Rounding out singles play, Matt Aaron bested senior Scott Scriffignano (Morris Plains, NJ / Morristown), 6-2, 6-2.

The Leopards claimed the doubles point, winning all three matches by scores of 8-1 (No. 1), 8-0 (No. 2) and 8-0 (No. 3).

The Green & White return to the court tomorrow, hosting Fordham at 11:00 am.
