Brooklyn, NY – Wagner plated four runs in the top of the fifth and withstood a pair of late Long Island rallies on the way to a 4-3 victory in the second game of today's doubleheader at LIU Field. With the wins, the Seahawks are now in a four-way tie for first place with Central Connecticut State, Monmouth and Sacred Heart at 11-7 while improving their overall record to 22-17. LIU falls to 9-32 and 5-13 in the NEC.
Neither team scored over the first three frames as freshman RHP
Mark Holmes (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) was outstanding, facing the minimum nine batters while yielding just one infield single.
The Blackbirds dented the scoreboard first in the bottom of the fourth. James Jones led off with a double before being moved over to third on a ground out. He crossed the plate on a Frank Dimasi ground out.
The Green & White responded immediately in the top of the fifth with four runs. Sophomore

Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) and classmate
Damian Csakai (Freehold Township, NJ / Freehold Township) each walked. Sophomore
Jared Gruccio (Landisville, NJ / Buena Regional) delivered a two-run single to center field, plating Martutartus and Conforti. Junior
Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) followed with a RBI single to right field. Sophomore
Matt Logan (Wall, NJ / Wall) capped the scoring with a RBI ground out, scoring Gruccio.
In the bottom of the sixth, LIU plated a pair of runs with two outs to cut the deficit to one at 4-3. The damage could have been worse, however on a wild pitch Drechsel got the runner trying to go from first to second.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Blackbirds got the lead runner aboard via a walk. Pinch-hitter Sam Sciamarelli then went ahead 2-0 before senior
Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) induced a bunt, which he dove to catch before firing over to first to double up Tyler Jones. After two more walks Huebner induced a fly out to right field, giving Wagner the doubleheader sweep.
Holmes struck out two while yielding one run on two hits and two walks over 5.0 innings to improve to 2-1. Huebner pitched 1.1 innings for his 10th save of the year and the second of the day.
Cori Benz (2-8) was the tough-luck loser, striking out seven while yielding four runs, two earned, on six hits and four walks in a complete-game effort.
Avella recorded two of Seahawks' six hits to lead the way on offense.
The teams will make up Friday's suspended game at 12:00 pm before playing their regularly scheduled game 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game. Wagner leads 4-2 in the top of the eighth with one out.
