FINAL STATS
FAIRFIELD, CT – The Wagner College women's lacrosse team gave Sacred Heart, one of the Northeast Conference's (NEC) top teams, a huge fight, taking an early 9-8 lead in overtime before the Pioneers rallied for a 10-9 win in three overtimes this afternoon.
With the victory, Sacred Heart improved to 10-6 on the season, 7-1 in NEC while Wagner fell to 4-12 overall, 3-5 in the NEC.
The victory gave the Pioneers a share of the 2009 Northeast Conference Regular Season Championship. Sacred Heart and the Quinnipiac Bobcats both finish the conference slate at 7-1 as the Pioneers earn the No. 1 seed for the first time in program history and the right to host next weekend's NEC Tournament via their head-to-head 9-8 win.
Trailing 7-4 at halftime, the Seahawks dominated the second half, outscoring Sacred Heart 4-2 over the final 30 minutes to forge an 8-8 tie after regulation play. Freshman midfielder
Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) kicked off a 3-0 run to open the second half with an unassisted goal at the 19:49 mark to make it a 7-5 game.
Fellow freshman midfielder
Melanie Garces (San Diego, CA/ Westview) closed the gap to 7-6 just 59 seconds later off an assist by senior attack
Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA/ Plymouth Whitemarsh). With 16:14 remaining in the game, sophomore attack
Karen Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY/ Skaneateles) knotted the game at 7-7 off an assist from junior midfielder
Teri Noll (Jordan, NY/ Jordan-Elbridge Central).
Sacred Heart's Carissa Hauser then found the net on an unassisted goal with 14:32 to go that put the Pioneers back on top at 8-7. That is the way the score remained until junior attack
Janine Bright (Commack, NY/ Commack) slammed home a goal off a Blundin assist with 6:21 remaining in regulation that tied the game at 8-8. Both defenses stiffened at this point as regulation play ended with the game tied at 8-8.
Bright gave the Seahawks a 9-8 lead with 4:42 left in the first six-minute overtime session, again off a feed from Blundin. Sacred Heart senior Amanda Williams scored her league-leading 50th goal with 1:49 left in the first overtime to tie the game at 9-9.
After the team's played a scoreless second overtime session, the game went into a third overtime which is sudden death. Just 15 seconds into this session, Williams weaved her way through the Wagner defense after the draw to bury the game-winner unassisted, her 51st goal of the season.
SHU got out to a 3-1 lead in the game's first five minutes of action as senior Mary Montesarchio, junior Carissa Hauser and freshman Kate Kmiotek all found the back of the cage. Wagner rebounded and tied it at 3-3 off scores by Clark and senior midfielder
Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) with just under 17 minutes left in the first half.
The Pioneers appeared bent on pulling away as Hauser started a three-goal run with her second at 12:27 off a feed from Montesarchio on an eight-meter attempt. Freshman Alicia Fuchs and Williams each followed with their firsts of the afternoon for a 6-3 Pioneer lead. Wagner ended the run just over a minute later on a goal by junior midfielder
Krista Malayter (Cheshire, CT/ Cheshire) off a Gonzalez assist but Williams would send the Pioneers in to the half with a 7-4 lead thanks to an eight-meter free-position goal with just 15 ticks left in the first half.
Clark, Bright and sophomore attack Vitkusfinished with two goals apiece for the Seahawks while Blundin was the team's top playmaker with three assists. Junior goalie
Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) was outstanding in goal, recording a season-high17 saves on the afternoon.
Sacred Heart held a 38-26 lead in shots, and led in ground balls by a 26-14 count. Wagner , meanwhile, was successful on 16-of-24 draw controls while both teams were 1-of-3 on free position shots.
Wagner will close out the 2009 season at non-conference foe Drexel on Tuesday, April 21 at 4:00 pm.
NOTES - No.1-seeded Sacred Heart will serve as the host to this year's NEC Tournament and will face No. 4 seed Monmouth with No. 2 seed Quinnipiac taking on No. 3 seed Mount St. Mary's in the semifinals on Friday, April 24. The NEC Championship game will take place on Sunday, April 26. Game times have not yet been announced.
