Seahawks over Iona, Villanova in Day One Sweep

Loudonville, NY – Wagner College's Water Polo squad inched one step closer to a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Regular Season Title with two wins over the Iona College Gaels, 7-5, and the Villanova University Wildcats, 16-5, on Saturday at Siena College. The Seahawks stand at 14-11 overall, with a 6-2 conference record.

GAME ONE: WAGNER vs. IONA

In the first period of game one, senior Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) tallied her 25th and 26th goals of the season, as the Seahawks and Gaels battled to a 2-1 score. A 2-0 run by the Gaels in the third period was squashed by three fourth-period goals courtesy of Wagner's freshmen duo. Beck scored first in the final frame to regain the lead for the Seahawks, 5-4. Olguin added her second goal minutes later to build on Wagner's late advantage. That score, which would later prove to be the game winner, was her 28th marker of the season. Beck concluded her outstanding effort with her third tally of the game, her 20th this season.

Junior goalie Kelsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Fullerton JC) was dominat in net for the Seahawks, stopping 19 shots in the win. Her 19 saves is the second-highest total this season. Rodgers made 21 saves in a 10-7 loss to Maryland on February 22nd.

The Seahawks rolled to a 16-5 win over the Wildcats in game two. After trading goals early on, the Green & White finished on a 3-0 run to cap a seven-goal first period performance. A 5-0 second period put Wagner comfortably ahead, 12-2, at halftime. Villanova rallied for two goals in the third frame, but the Seahawks spoiled any momentum with a 4-1 run in the final period.
