About the Seahawks
With its back against the wall four games ago, Wagner responded with four consecutive must wins, including home wins over second-place Mount St. Mary's, first-place Robert Morris, followed by equally impressive road triumphs over Quinnipiac and Monmouth, catapulting the Seahawks into the No. 7 seed in the NEC Tournament. The Seahawks finished the season by winning six of its final seven games.
Wagner fifth-year senior guard
Joey Mundweiler had a day for the ages when it mattered most as he nailed 11 three-pointers, setting an NEC and school record, in leading the Seahawks past Monmouth 91-60. Coupled with an 18-point outing on 5-of-11 shooting from downtown in 75-66 win at Quinnipiac on Thursday, Mundweiler averaged 28.5 in Wagner's two wins last week en route to being named the Choice Hotels NEC Player of the Week. Fifth-year senior point guard
Justin Drummond continues to fill up the stat columns. In the win over Quinnipiac, the 6-6 Drummond recorded his second double-double of the season, tallying 21 points, setting a career high with 10 rebounds while dishing out four assists. In Wagner's 2-0 week, Drummond averaged 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and dished out 14 assists with just three turnovers in 37.5 minutes per game. Fifth-year senior forward
Jamal Smith is up to 1,249 career points, 21st on the Seahawk all-time list.
Wagner continues to be the only team in the NEC with four players averaging double figures in Mundweiler (14.0), Smith (11.9), senior forward Llew Radford (11.2) and Drummond (10.5). Radford's 7.5 rebounds per game leads the team and is fourth in the NEC while Drummond leads the squad in assists (120), steals (79) and blocks (24). Wagner has the distinction of being the only team in the NEC to own victories over both No.1 seed Robert Morris and No. 2 seed Mount St. Mary's this season.
About the Mountaineers
Mount St. Mary's is the defending NEC Tournament champions, winning the 2008 title game at Sacred Heart as the No. 5 seed. The Mountaineers are led by their quick and dynamic backcourt of All-NEC First-Team selection Jeremy Goode and Jean Cajou, who average 15.8 and 3.2 points, respectively.
The Matchup
The defending champion Mountaineers finished in a three-way tie for second place and will attempt to become the first NEC team to repeat since Rider turned the trick way back in 1993-94. Wagner enters the postseason riding a wave of momentum having clinched the final NEC playoff spot on Saturday with a 91-60 road conquest of Monmouth. The Seahawks won their lone NEC championship in 2003. Mount St. Mary's has collected three league titles - in 1995, 1999 and 2008. The two teams have met just once in NEC Tournament play, a 65-48 semifinal win for the Seahawks in 1993.
