Manhattan Holds Off Wagner 14-9 in Women’s Lacrosse Action

Riverdale, NY – Freshman midfielder Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY / Westhill), the reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the week, recorded her second consecutive four-goal game but it was not enough as the Wagner College women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-9 decision at Manhattan.

With the win, the Jaspers improved to 4-1 while the Seahawks fell to 1-4.

The Jaspers raced out to a 7-1 lead behind two goals apiece from Chrissy Gutenberger and Phelicia VanOverbeke. Clark's first goal of the game, an unassisted tally with 20:08 left in the opening half, tied the game at 1-1. Manhattan then scored the next six goals before senior junior midfielder Janine Bright (Commack, NY/ Commack) broke the string with a goal off an assist from senior attack Kelly Blundin (Plymouth meeting, PA / Plymouth-Whitemarsh).

Clark scored three second-half goals while Blundin added two with junior midfielder Krista Malayter (Cheshire, CT/ Cheshire) and senior midfielder Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY / Westhill) adding one second-half goal apiece.

Gutenberger, VanOverbeke and Julia Lavelle scored three goals each for Manhattan while Allison Johnson had nine saves in goal for the Jaspers. For the Seahawks, in addition to Clark's four goals , Blundin finished with four points as well on two goals and two assists. Junior Alex Johnston (Malius, NY / Fayetteville-Manlius) registered nine saves for the Seahawks.

Manhattan held a 38-24 advantage in shots, a 15-10 edge in draw controls while ground balls were even at 17-17. Wagner was 4-of-7 in free position shots while Manhattan was 2-of-6.

The Seahawks are next in action on Wednesday, March 18 when they travel to Loudonville, NY to meet Siena in a 4:00 pm contest.
