FINAL STATS
MUNDWEILER MAGIC
West Long Branch, NJ – Wagner College fifth-year senior guard
Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS/ Olathe East) had a day for the ages when it mattered most as he nailed 11 three-pointers, setting a Northeast Conference (NEC) and school record, in leading the Seahawks past Monmouth 91-60.
With the Seahawks in need of a victory to gain entry into next week's NEC Tournament, the 6-2 Mundweiler responded by draining 11-of-18 three-pointers to highlight a career-high 39-point outing.
By virtue of the win, Wagner gained the No. 7 seed in the eight-team NEC Tourney and will travel to No. 2 seed Mount St. Mary's in a first-round matchup on Thursday at 7:00 pm.
In notching its fourth straight win and second straight on the road, the Seahawks end the regular season with a record 16-13, 8-10 in the NEC. Monmouth, meanwhile, saw its season come to end as the Hawks finish with a final mark of 8-23, 6-12 in the conference play.
Mundweiler's 11 made three-pointers are the most this season by a Division I player, bettering the 10 trifectas made by Notre Dame's Kyle McAlarney vs. North Carolina on Nov. 26 and Jodie Meeks vs. Tennessee on Jan. 13. The previous NEC record for three-pointers made in a single game was 10, shared by former Seahawk Scott Murphy vs. Mount St. Mary's (2/7/91) and matched by Central Connecticut State's Tristan Blackwood vs. Robert Morris (2/22/07).
Freshman guard
Chris Martin (Sicklerville, NJ/ Apex Academies) got into the long range act as well, pumping in four three-pointers en route to a 14-point performance off the bench. Fifth-year senior guard
Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD/ Towson Catholic) added 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting and dished out five assists, while senior forward Llew Radford (Newport News, VA/ Heritage) chipped in with nine points, five rebounds and four assists. Fifth-year senior guard
Justin Drummond delivered another command performance, filling up the stat sheet to the tune of seven points and six rebounds while equaling his career high in assists (10) and steals.
The Seahawks dished out a season-high 28 assists on 32 made baskets while also setting a season high with 17 made three-pointers, which was also a school record, besting the previous mark of 16 three-pointers made vs. Brown (11/1700). For the game, Wagner shot 55 percent from the field while holding the hawks to 32 percent shooting. From three-point range, Wagner shot a sizzling 61 percent (17-of-28).
The Hawks, who were led offensively by the freshmen trio of Will Campbell, Mike Myers Keitt and Travis Taylor.Campbell, who notched his fourth straight 20-point outing, led Monmouth with 21 points, while Myers Keitt (12) and Taylor (11) rounded the double-figure scorers for the Blue and White.
Campbell, who scored in double-figures in each of his last 11 games of the season, went 10-for-12 from the free throw line, while Taylor, who notched his team-leading 23rd double-digit outing, connected on 4-for-9 from the floor. Myers Keitt added 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Blue and White. Playing in their last career games for the Hawks were seniors Alex Nunner and Shawn Barlow.
This marked the final game at Boylan Gym, which has served as the Hawks' home 1965 as Monmouth will play all of its home games in the new, on-campus, $57 million Multi-Purpose Activity Center, in the 2009-10 season.
More Mundweiler - The 39 points scored tied for the 10th-highest single-game output in Wagner history and were the most by a Seahawk since Dec. 9, 1987 when Dean Borges tallied 39 at Manhattan. Amazingly, Mundweiler''s career total came without the benefit of a single free throw attempted.
Mundweiler soared into the Seahawk all-time top-20 in career scoring as his 1,259 points rank him 19th.
The 11 made three-pointers shattered Wagner's previous school mark of seven three-pointers in a game which he shared with three others. The 18 three-point attempts were one shy of the school-record he hoisted at Bryant on Feb. 12.
Mundweiler was equally proficient in both halves vs. Monmouth. In helping stake Wagner to a 41-32 halftime lead, he shot 6-of-10 from beyond the arc en route to 20 first-half points. Following intermission, he sank 5-of-8 from three-point range and wound up the second half with 19 points. Mundweiler was 14-of-22 overall from the field, with the 14 made field goals setting a career high while his 22 attempts tied his career best. His previous career-high in scoring was 25 vs. Bucknell (11/24/07), his previous career high in field goals made was eight vs. Kansas St. (12/29/07).
In hitting the 11 three-pointers, Mundweiler moved up to No. 2 on the NEC all-time three-pointers made list with 305. The only player in NEC history to have made more three-pointers than Mundweiler is Central Connecticut State's Tristan Blackwood who hit 328 from 2004-08.
Mundweiler has now made 91-of-229 three-pointers this season. The 91 made threes places him No. 2 on the Seahawk all-time single-season list (Dedrick Dye, 96 in 2002-03) and No. 3 in three-pointers attempted in a single-season.
