Wagner Drops 74-61 Decision at Nevada Despite 21 Points from Martin

– Junior guard Chris Martin (Sicklerville, NJ/ Apex Academies) scored 21 points and senior center Michael Orock (Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) added 15 points and seven rebounds but it was not enough as Nevada pulled away for a 74-61 victory in the second round of the HoopTV Las Vegas Classic. 

With the loss, the Seahawks are now 1-9 on the season while the Wolf Pack improve to 6-4. 

Wagner held tough with the Wolf Pack for the majority of the game and trailed by just a 32-27 count at halftime. A three-point jumper by Martin opened the second half and drew the Seahawks to within two at 32-30. While this was as close as Wagner would make it, this was still a single-digit game with 11:55 to play as the feisty Seahawks trailed by just 49-40 at this juncture of the contest. 

The Wolf Pack then went on a 14-5 run to open their biggest lead of the game at 63-45 with 6:57 to go following a layup by Brandon Fields. 

A three-point jumper by freshman guard Danny Mundweiler (Overland Park, KS/ Olathe East) sliced the deficit to 67-54 with 4:02 left in the game. The Seahawks' then went to a full-court press which caused several turnovers. Another three-pointer by Mundweiler made it a 69-59 game and a driving layup by Martin cut it to 69-61 with 1:59 to go. Nevada sealed Wagner's fate when Ray Kraemer drilled a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to build the lead back to 11 at 72-61. 

Martin's 21-point outing was highlighted by a 5-for-10 effort from beyond the arc. Orock was 7-of-11 from the field against Nevada's tall front line. Freshman forward Josh Thompson (Richland, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) turned in a solid floor game with eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal. 

For the game, Nevada out-shot Wagner 54%-35% and led in the rebounding department, 42-29. Luke Babbit scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures for Nevada. 

Wagner now flies to Las Vegas for the final two games of the tournament. Wagner will play 0-9 Jackson St. on Tue., Dec. 22 in an 8:00 pm EST tip-off. The Seahawks will then meet either Eastern Washington or Chicago State in the final game of the Classic on Wed., Dec. 23.
