Hackensack, NJ – Four different players scored in double figures, led by fifth-year senior guard
Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS/ Olathe East) who tallied 18 points, as Wagner earned a 78-69 NEC victory over Fairleigh Dickinson in a back and forth tussle that featured eight ties and 12 lead changes.
Wagner is now 9-4 on the season, 2-1 in the NEC while FDU fell to 2-11 overall, 2-1 in the conference.
The Seahawks took the lead for good on a layup by senior forward
Llew Radford (Newport News, VA/ Heritage) that gave Wagner a 63-62 lead with 4:43 left in the game. This bucket ignited a 13-2 run that lifted the Seahawks to a commanding 74-64 lead with 39 seconds to go. Radford recorded his second consecutive double-double and fourth of the season in a spirited 15-point, 10-rebound effort.
Fifth-year senior point guard
Justin Drummond (Baltimore, MD/ McDonogh) scored 17 points and helped seal the game by sinking 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch. Fifth-year senior forward
Jamal Smith(Baltimore, MD/ Towson Catholic) added 16 points and seven rebounds, which give him an even 500 rebounds for his career. Junior center
Michael Orock (Hoboken, NJ/ Hoboken) also made his presence felt in the post with nine rebounds to go with two points.
Wagner built a 42-34 halftime lead behind 11 points from Mundweiler who was hot early, hitting his first three-point shots of the game. FDU opened the second half with a 16-6 run to regain the lead at 50-48 with 11:58 left on a dunk by massive 6-8, 245-pound center Alvin Mofunanya. Neither team led by more than five points until Wagner put the game away with that late 13-2 burst.
Guard Cameron Tyler led FDU with 20 points while Mofunanya added 18 . Wagner did an outstanding defensive job on guard Sean Baptiste, limiting the Knights' leading scorer to 10 points on 3-of-13 shooting. Baptiste came into the game averaging 16.8 points per game and is the reigning NEC Player of the Week following a 37-point explosion in a win over Quinnipiac on Saturday.
The Seahawks dominated the boards, holding a 40-24 edge in the rebounding department while out-shooting the Knights 50%-43% from the field.
Wagner is next in action on Thursday night when the Seahawks travel to New Britain, CT to face Central Connecticut St. in a 7:00 pm tip.
