Dover, DE- The Wagner College women's soccer team collected its first win of the year in thrilling fashion 2-1 at Delaware State in non-conference action earlier this afternoon. The Seahawks improve to 1-1-0 on the year. While the Hornets fall to 0-3-0.
Neither team could get anything going offensively until late in the second half. With the score tied 0-0, senior midfielder
Diane Gantenhammer (South Farmingdale, NY/ Farmingdale) got the Green &White on the scoreboard when she blasted a shot to the top left corner of the goal on a penalty kick to give Wagner the 1-0 lead in the 82nd minute. The Hornets then responded with a goal in the 87th minute tying the game at 1-1.
This tie was short lived as sophomore midfielder
Catherine Del Medico (Park Ridge, IL/ Maine South) responded with the game-winning goal seconds later off an assist by senior defender
Stephanie Burnett (Coca Beach, FL/ Satellite).
Del Medico's game winning goal in the 87th minute was the first of her Seahawk career.
Senior Goalkeeper
Leslie Reed (Indian Harbour Beach, FL/ Satellite) earned her first win of the season with a solid two saves while playing all 90 minutes.
As for the stat sheet, Wagner won the battle of both Shots (21-7) and corner kicks (7-0).
Wagner returns to action Sunday as the Seahawks travel to Easton, PA to face Lafayette College. Game time is set for 5pm.
