Brett Self

Brett Self begins his second year at Wagner College as assistant coach and Recruiting Coordinator. In his first year he made an immediate impact with his contributions on and off the court.

Coach Self was instrumental in the signing of five incoming freshmen for the 2011-2012 season. Capitalizing on his southern roots, Coach Self recruited Shawn Marie Heiliger from Charlotte, North Carolina.

In addition to his recruiting responsibilities, he is responsible for post player development. Last season, 6-3 center Kelly Clark more then doubled her scoring average, improving from 5.2 ppg. as a sophomore to 12.2 ppg. as a junior. In addition, her rebounding average improved from 3.6 rpg.as a sophomore to 6.2 rpg. as a junior.

“ Coach Self is an extremely dedicated young coach with an outstanding work ethic. In addition to working with individual skill development, his aggressive, pressure man to man defense gives our team a competitive edge,” said Head Coach Gela Mikalauskas.

Self worked at Auburn University as a Graduate Assistant under Head Coach Nell Fortner. He assisted with post player development off the court under the tutelage of Auburn Assistant Coach Mark Simons. Auburn won the SEC regular season championship en route to a sparkling 30-4 record in 2008-09.

Self graduated from Auburn in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Business/Marketing before earning his Master’s in Adult Education.

Prior to his tenure at Auburn, he played four years at Hooper Academy and helped the team win the Alabama Independent School Association Championship in ’04.

A native of Pintlala, AL, Self was also a nominee for the Jimmy Hitchcock Top Christian Athlete Award. He is the son of Darrell and Barbara Self. Darrell is a legendary high school coach in the AISA Hall of Fame. Self has two older brothers; Steven and Brandon.
