STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College field hockey team fell to CAA member Hofstra by a score of 5-4 in overtime at the Field Hockey Complex on Friday afternoon.
The Seahawks (0-3, 0-0 NEC) were led by senior Floortje Leunisse who scored Wagner's first three goals within 11 minutes of each other. After Leunisse's third goal, Wagner held a 3-2 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Pride (2-1, 0-0 CAA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Leunisse found the back of the cage three times unanswered.
The Green & White found themselves up 4-2 after senior Victoria Gonzalez-Lopez put home a rebound off of one of Wagner's seven corner chances. Concurrently, Hofstra earned 10 penalty corner opportunities throughout the game.
Thirty seconds after Wagner went up 4-2, the Pride responded and made it a 4-3 game with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Four minutes later, Hofstra's eighth penalty corner of the day resulted in forward Sarah Smalley's second goal and a tied 4-4 game.
In overtime, the Pride took two corners and attempted two shots, with the game-winner being scored 4:17 into the period.
As a team, Wagner took 13 shots with 11 on target. As for Hofstra, the Pride took 18 with 8 placed towards the cage.
Freshman Miley Brezgel came into the game at halftime for senior Mia DiGenova. In her Wagner debut, Brezgel denied three shots.
Next up, the Seahawks welcome Big East member Temple on Sunday, Sept. 6. Start time between the Owls and the Seahawks is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Field Hockey Complex.
