STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Wagner women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to NJIT on Thursday night on Hameline Field. 

After a scoreless opening 43 minutes, NJIT (2-2-1, 0-0-0 AE) broke through late in the first half giving the visitors a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Wagner (1-4-0, 0-0-0 NEC) responded with a strong second-half effort, holding NJIT without a shot over the final 45 minutes while generating seven shots of its own. The Seahawks finished the contest with a 10-6 advantage in total shots and a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.

The Seahawks created several quality opportunities after the break. Senior Alana Goldsmith, and juniors Deirdre Meberg, Alana Arjona, and Kelly Gallagher each put shots on target, but NJIT made four second-half saves to preserve the shutout.

Wagner will return to action on the road on Sunday, Sept. 6 against UMBC. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park in Baltimore, Maryland.
