Women's Soccer Defeats CCSU 2-1 in NEC Opener

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College women's soccer team opened NEC play with a 2-1 victory over Central Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field.

Wagner (2-5-2, 1-0-0 NEC) wasted little time getting on the board, as junior Megan Knapp found the back of the net just 4:12 into the contest for her second goal of the season, giving the Seahawks an early 1-0 advantage.

Central Connecticut State (3-6-0, 1-1-0 NEC) responded in the 28th minute, converting a penalty kick to even the score at 1-1.

The Blue Devils outshot Wagner 12-2 in the opening half, but junior goalkeeper Abigail Marcello made two saves to keep the contest tied heading into halftime.

The Seahawks came out strong in the second half, regaining the lead less than four minutes after the break. Following a corner kick, senior Alana Goldsmith assisted junior Hailey Knapp, who found the back of the net in the 49th minute for her first goal of the season and the eventual game-winner.

Wagner continued to apply offensive pressure throughout the second half, outshooting CCSU 9-6 over the final 45 minutes.

The Seahawks held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks, while Marcello finished with two saves to earn her second victory of the season.

With the win, Wagner opens NEC play 1-0 and earns its second consecutive 2-1 victory over Central Connecticut State, dating back to last season's conference championship game.

Next, the Seahawks will continue NEC play on Sunday, Sept. 27, when they host Howard at Hameline Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
