Football Falls to California on Saturday Afternoon

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Wagner College football team fell to ACC member California, 49-7, on Saturday afternoon at California Memorial Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

California (2-1, 1-0 ACC) opened the scoring with a 28-yard touchdown run on its opening possession before adding three more touchdowns to take a 29-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Seahawks (1-3, 0-1 NEC) responded with a 12-play, 65-yard scoring drive that began late in the opening quarter.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Benjamin Newman kept the drive alive with a 10-yard completion to senior wide receiver Jeremiah Colclough on fourth-and-one. Newman later connected with redshirt junior Zion Fowler-El for an eight-yard gain before breaking free for a 23-yard run to move Wagner inside the California 15-yard line.

Two plays later, Newman found sophomore wide receiver Malik Redd for an eight-yard touchdown pass with 11:30 remaining in the second quarter. Freshman kicker Johnny DiSalvatore converted the extra point to make it 29-7.

California answered with a 36-yard field goal and a 16-yard touchdown pass to extend its lead to 39-7 heading into halftime.

The Golden Bears added a touchdown in the third quarter before the Wagner defense came up with a goal-line stand later in the period. After California took possession at the Wagner two-yard line following an interception, the Seahawks held the Golden Bears out of the end zone on four consecutive plays, forcing a turnover on downs at their own three-yard line.

California added a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to account for the final score.

Newman finished 15-of-31 passing for 86 yards and one touchdown while adding a 23-yard rush.

Freshman Shawn James led the Seahawks on the ground with 36 yards on eight carries. Colclough and graduate student Derek Burrell each recorded three receptions for 24 yards, while Redd finished with three catches for 20 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, senior Shamar Williams led Wagner with 10 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Juniors Julio Tatis and Brendan Leal, along with Evan Dukes, each added six tackles.

Senior Karlos Grier totaled 103 kickoff return yards on four attempts, including a 51-yard return in the opening quarter.

California finished with 626 yards of total offense, while Wagner recorded 198 yards.

Following a bye week, the Seahawks will head to New Britain, Conn., for an NEC matchup against Central Connecticut State on Saturday, Oct. 3. Kickoff is set for noon at Arute Field.
