BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — Wagner men's swimming & diving and women's bowling were both named as the NEC Winter Team Sportsmanship Award winners for their respective sports, the conference office announced on Monday.
This is the second Team Sportsmanship Award for each team since the NEC started awarding team sportsmanship awards in 2008. Women's bowling last won the award in 2021, while men's swimming & diving won last season.
The sportsmanship awards are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
The men's swimming & diving team is coming off a season where it won meets against Southern Connecticut and LIU, placed third in the Harold Anderson Invitational, and finished second in the NEC Championships.
Two swimmers, sophomores
Florian Schumich and
Ben McLaughlin, each won the NEC 'Swimmer of the Week' honor during the regular season, while Schumich joined junior Nikko Carillo in winning a combined three gold medals at the NEC Championships.
Women's bowling competed under interim head coach
Richard Behan this season, dealing with adversity due to severe winter weather, battling cancellations and delays in the front half of the season as heavy snowstorms hitting the northeast.
