GREENWOOD, Ind. — Eight total student-athletes between the men's and women's tennis teams have been selected to the College Sports Communicators' Academic All-District division I squad, the organization announced on Tuesday.
The College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District teams recognize the best student-athletes in NCAA divisions I-III, and the NAIA. Nominees must have played in 75% of all team matches, while maintaining a 3.5 GPA.
The four men's selections are graduate student
Tom Lamers, senior
Sebastian Dobson, and sophomores
Vibhu Challagundla and
Joshua Zhao. The women's selections included junior
Dariana Vera, and sophomores
Victoria Madail,
Claudia Lindsey, and
Liepa Sataite.
Lamers finished his season 10-8 at third singles, earning All-NEC second team honors in the process. His win in the NEC Championship match clinched Wagner's first ever NEC Championship. Lamers' doubles partner, Dobson, helped the pair win 10 matches at third doubles, the most in the NEC.
Zhao and Challagundla anchored the back-end of the singles lineup for the Seahawks, each playing in at least 16 of the team's 22 matches, They each played in a three-set match in the NEC Championship match, with Zhao prevailing and giving Wagner a key team point.
On the women's side, Wagner's primary first-doubles pair of Madail and Vera each earned an Academic All-District nod. Madail finished the year at 13-8 as the primary first singles player, and earned a spot on the All-NEC first team for singles. Her doubles partner, Vera, picked up a win in the Seahawk's NEC Tournament victory against Stonehill, and finished the year with eight wins at fifth singles.
Sataite earned an NEC All-Tournament nod for her performance at the NEC Championships, winning a singles match on court 2 and two doubles matches on court 3. Her last doubles victory helped Wagner win the doubles round against FDU in the NEC Semifinals. Lindsey also picked up a doubles win in that semifinal match, and anchored the fourth singles spot in the Seahawks' lineup.
Additionally, Lamers and Madail were selected as CSC Academic All-America finalists. The Academic All-American women's team will be announced on Tuesday, June 2, and the men's team will be announced on Wednesday, June 3.
