CLEVELAND, Ohio. — The Wagner College men's lacrosse team fell to NEC opponent Cleveland State by a score of 10-9 on Krenzler Field this past Saturday.
The Seahawks (4-6, 2-2 NEC) struck early with two goals from freshman Dylan Popehn before graduate student Theo Kostakos made it a 3-0 game just under five minutes into the contest.
The Vikings (5-5, 3-1 NEC) responded with one goal before junior Danny McMahon made it a 4-1 game in favor of Wagner at the end of the first.
With eight goals scored in the second-quarter between the two teams, Wagner ended with an 8-5 halftime lead.
In the third period, Cleveland State scored towards the beginning and end of the frame to make it a 8-7 game heading into the fourth.
Popehn scored his third goal of the game to start the fourth, accounting for 14 goals during his first year on Grymes HIll.
Over the final eight minutes of the contest, the VIkings would go onto outscore the Seahawks, 3-0, and win by one score. Cleveland State's game-deciding goal came with 4:27 to play from the stick of Adam Van Voorhis.
In net, junior goalkeeper Angus Snow recorded 16 saves with five ground balls. Senior Tristan McMahon earned three caused turnovers and three ground balls while Nico Kross collected two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Junior Dylan Dwyer won 12 out of 21 face-offs for a win percentage of 57.1% with five ground balls as well. The Seahawks won the face-off battle, 13-10, as a team.
