Softball Sweeps Road Doubleheader against Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The Wagner softball team swept its doubleheader against Saint Peter's on Tuesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field.

The first three runs of the game were scored on outs. Saint Peter's opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning before Wagner responded with a sacrifice fly of its own and an RBI groundout. The Peacocks recorded the first RBI hit of the game in the bottom of the third, using a single to tie the contest at two.

Saint Peter's regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI single, and a second run came around to score on the play following a Wagner fielding error. Junior pitcher Jill Theodorou entered in relief and quieted the Peacock bats, but the Seahawks still trailed, 4–2, entering the sixth inning.

Wagner erased the deficit in explosive fashion, scoring seven runs in the sixth inning on just four hits — all with two outs. Sophomore second baseman Alayna Giampolo sparked the rally with a game-tying two-run double before the Peacocks issued three consecutive bases-loaded walks, giving Wagner a 7–4 lead. Senior shortstop Payton Janicki capped the inning with a two-run single, marking her 11th RBI over the last five games.

A solo home run from Saint Peter's in the bottom half of the inning proved to be the final push, as Wagner secured a 9–5 victory in game one of the doubleheader.

The second game also saw Wagner come from behind to win, though unlike the opener, the first four innings remained scoreless. Saint Peter's broke through in the bottom of the fifth with its second solo home run of the doubleheader to take a 1–0 lead, but the Seahawks answered in the next half-inning on an RBI single from senior left fielder Lea Rachel.

In Wagner's final at-bat, sophomore right fielder Taylor Reynolds delivered the go-ahead run with an RBI single before scoring on a freshman catcher Lanie Doukas RBI single, extending the lead to 3–1. Freshman starting pitcher Samantha Lotus closed out her complete game with her third strikeout of the day, earning the win in Wagner's 3–1 game two victory.

The Seahawks will return to the diamond on Saturday, April 25, when they host FDU for a doubleheader in their penultimate NEC series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., with game two scheduled for approximately 3 p.m.
