SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Wagner softball team dropped the last game of their series with Le Moyne on Sunday, losing 11-2 in six innings.
The Seahawks fell behind after just two pitches in the first inning; it started with a lead-off double, then a bunt which the defense handled poorly, leading to the first run of the game.
Wagner got that run back in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from sophomore right fielder
Taylor Reynolds, but it didn't take long for the floodgates to open for the Dolphins. Two RBI singles and a three-run home run gave the home team a 6-1 lead after the third inning, then they recorded three straight RBI hits in the fourth inning, extending the lead to 9-1.
Junior third baseman
Sydnie Trujillo knocked in one more run in the top of the fifth with an RBI double, but Le Moyne scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to trigger the mercy rule, which gave it the 11-2 victory.
The Seahawks remain in third place in the NEC standings, with two more conference series remaining on the schedule.
They'll return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 14, when they take a trip to Jersey City to face St. Peter's in a doubleheader at Joseph J. Jaroschak Field. The first game will start at 1 p.m., and the second game will start at approximately 3 p.m.
