AUGUSTA, N.J. — Wagner made a statement in its opener against Norfolk State on Friday, taking a 15-2 win over the Spartans for a seven-inning, run rule win.
It was just the second complete game by a Wagner pitcher this season, with senior Colin Trizuto going 7.0 innings and allowing just two runs in 28 batters faced. He finished at 85 pitches, now 3-2 this season after earning the win.
Graduate Lukas Torres continues to build on a massive season, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs, hitting his second triple of the season.
Senior Nicholas Mazzotta put Wagner on the board first with a two-run home run in the first inning, kicking off what was a stretch of eight unanswered runs scored by the Seahawks. Mazzotta finished his day 1-for-1 with three RBIs, three walks and a pair of runs scored.
Redshirt junior Evan McRae also homered, a lead-off solo shot in the second inning that was his second as a Seahawk. Just behind Torres with three hits, McRae finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs, stealing two bases on the way to scored one of those runs.
Wagner put up four runs in the second then added solo runs in the fourth and fifth, taking an 8-0 lead before the Spartans were able to get on the board in the sixth. The Seahawks answered quickly, putting up seven in the sixth to solidify the potential for a run rule to be called in place.
Juniors Diego Tavarez, Joseph Mennella and Dylan Immel each finished with a pair of hits — Immel and Tavarez each hit a double.
The Seahwawks return to Skylands Stadium on Saturday, April 11 for a 7 p.m. EDT game where the team looks to win the series against the Spartans.
