STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner women's tennis team earned their first win of the spring season on Sunday, when they defeated Monmouth on the CSI Tennis Courts, 4-3.
The Seahawks started the match by taking two of three matches in the doubles round. Senior
Samantha Bentsianov and sophomore
Liepa Sataite got things started with a 6-3 win on court 3. Monmouth would tie up the round with a 6-3 win of its own on court 2, but the Seahawks clinched the doubles point on court 1, when sophomore
Victoria Madail and junior
Dariana Vera won their match 6-4.
Wagner and Monmouth traded points in the singles round. Sataite, fresh off her NEC Player of the Week award, won her match on court 1 sandwiched in between Monmouth wins on courts 3 and 4, leaving the team match tied at 2-2 with three individual matches remaining.
Madail and Vera, who clinched the doubles point, also clinched the match in the singles round with consecutive wins on courts 2 and 5 respectively. Madail won a tough-fought tiebreaker in the first set, then bounced back with a 6-3 set three win after being shut out in the second set. Vera fell behind in her match after dropping the first set, but bounced back with wins in the final two sets to secure Wagner's fourth point, and the win.
