NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — The Wagner College men's basketball team fell on the road Saturday afternoon, dropping an 84–67 decision to Central Connecticut State inside Detrick Gymnasium.
The game opened tightly as both teams traded baskets, with a jumper from junior John Awoke giving Wagner (8–14, 3–8 NEC) a one-point lead, 22–21, with 6:29 remaining in the first half. CCSU (13–10, 7–5 NEC) responded with a late surge, closing the half on a 17–6 run to take a 38–28 advantage into the break.
CCSU continued its momentum after intermission, opening the second half on an extended run to push the margin to 15. Wagner battled back with triples from junior Eddie Placer and baskets from junior Bryan Akanmu, trimming the deficit to single digits midway through the half, but the Blue Devils answered with a decisive stretch to regain control.
Placer finished with a season-high 26 points, knocking down 7-of-10 shots from beyond the arc. Akanmu added eight points and seven rebounds, while redshirt senior Jaden Baker, Awoke, and Michael Cooper each chipped in eight.
Wagner shot 37.5 percent from the field and 9-of-27 from three-point range, while CCSU finished at 57.4 percent overall and held a 36–28 rebounding edge.
The Seahawks will continue NEC play next week, hosting LIU on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. inside the Spiro Sports Center.
