Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Wagner College men's basketball team fell on the road Monday night, dropping an 83–65 decision to LIU inside the Steinberg Wellness Center.
Wagner (9–16, 4–10 NEC) kept pace early as consecutive triples from graduate student
Travis Gray and redshirt senior
Jaden Baker put the Seahawks up seven, 12–5. LIU (18–9, 12–2 NEC) answered with a run capped by a dunk to take a 15–14 lead. The Sharks' margin grew to as much as eight in the half as they carried a 37–31 advantage into the break.
LIU came out firing in the second half, shooting over 69 percent from the field after intermission and extending its lead to double digits midway through the frame. Wagner continued to battle, trimming the deficit to 12 following baskets from juniors
John Awoke and
Michael Cooper, but the Sharks answered with a decisive run to pull away down the stretch.
Junior
Bryan Akanmu led Wagner with 10 points and six rebounds, while Gray, junior
Eddie Placer, and sophomore
Binael Basil added nine points apiece.
LIU shot 58.2 percent from the floor and connected on 10 three-pointers, compared to Wagner's 41.8 percent shooting and six made triples. The Seahawks held a rebounding edge, but the Sharks finished with nine blocks and 11 steals on the night.
Wagner returns to action later this week as NEC play continues with a 7 p.m. matchup at Mercyhurst on Thursday, Feb. 19 in Erie, Pa.
