STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Freshman epeeist
Ana Margarita Paredes, sophomore foilist
Emiliano Renteria, and junior sabrist
Flavio Vinci each competed internationally in the month of February, and earned favorable results throughout.
Paredes and Renteria competed at the 3rd Annual ADNEM National Selection Tournament in Tabasco, Mexico. The senior women's epee section of the tournament took place on Feb. 7, where Paredes was the fourth seed out of 35 fencers. After sweeping her way through the group stage, she got all the way to the quarterfinals before losing to the fifth seed, 15-10.
At the end of the tournament, Paredes' point total gave her the top spot in Mexico's national senior women's epee rankings.
Renteria competed in the same tournament in the men's senior foil section on Feb. 10. Like Paredes, he won every bout in his group stage and entered the knockout round as the second seed. Renteria would advance all the way to the semifinals, and ultimately earned a tie for third place in the final rankings.
Overseas, junior sabrist
Flavio Vinci competed at Italy's National Selection Tournament in Foggia on Feb. 15. Despite being ranked 67th out of 109 men's sabre competitors, Vinci won all of his bouts in the group stage and earned the 33rd seed in the knockout stage.
Even though he was the lower seed in each of his knockout rounds, Vinci won three straight bouts to advance to the quarterfinals; this included a 15-14 upset victory over the top seed in the bracket. His run would end there, finishing the tournament in eighth place.
Paredes, Renteria and Vinci will fence for Wagner again on Sunday, Feb. 22, when they compete in the Shark Showdown at LIU.
