Field Hockey Takes Down Mercyhurst for Third Straight Conference Win

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Wagner College field hockey team (4-5, 3-1 NEC) won its third consecutive Northeast Conference game against the Mercyhurst Lakers (0-8, 0-3 NEC) by a score of 6-0 at the Wagner College Field Hockey Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks displayed a balanced scoring offense throughout four quarters of play while ensuring their third shutout of the season. 

Junior Natalie McGivern got the ball rolling in the first quarter, scoring her fourth goal of the season to grant the Seahawks a 1-0 lead after the first quarter. 

Freshman Julie Povel and junior Floortje Leunisse finished with two goals each, finding the back of the cage during the second and third quarters. 

For Povel, she accounted for her first goals as a member of the Seahawks early in the second quarter, while Leunisse leads the team in goals scored (5) and overall points (13).

Freshman Julia de Leeuw also accounted for her first goal of her collegiate career in the fourth off of a penalty corner setup from senior captains Hailey Bianchino and Claire Evans.

Bianchino earned two assists while Povel and sophomore Erika Parker recorded one assist each.

In the cage, sophomore Saar van Dalen played the first half while senior Sam Black entered to close out the game and ensure the shutout. Black recorded two saves during her 30 minutes of action. 

As a team, the Seahawks attempted 24 shots, 12 of which were on target, while attempting 12 penalty corners. Comparatively, the Lakers took four shots, two of which were on target, while attempting two penalty corners. 

Next up, Wagner travels to Saint Francis U for a 3:00 p.m. matchup on Friday, October 3 in Loretto, PA.
