WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Wagner College field hockey team (2-5, 1-1 NEC) defeated conference newcomer New Haven (0-7, 0-2 NEC) by a score of 7-1 at DellaCamera Stadium on Sunday evening in West Haven, CT.
Junior Felicitas Herrero found the back of the cage three times, becoming the fourth Seahawks since 2019 to earn a hat-trick in a regular season game.
Herrero connected on a penalty stroke in the first quarter before being set up by junior Floortje Leunisse in the second. The Buenos Aires, Argentina native completed the hat-trick early in the second half.
The transfer from Limestone is the last Seahawks to score three goals in one game since Laura van Hamburg accomplished the feat on October 9, 2022 against Stonehill.Â
Along with Herrero, Leunisse, senior Hailey Bianchino, freshman Juliana Gonzales, and freshman Kayla Sykes all scored for Wagner. For Gonzales and Sykes, the freshmen duo recorded their first goals as members of the Seahawks.Â
On defense, sophomore Saar van Dalen and senior Sam Black split duties in the cage, each playing a half. Van Dalen earned four saves while Black saved one shot.Â
Wagner took a commanding lead early at the end of the first quarter, leading 4-0, and never looked to back even its record in the conference standings, taking home the win by a score of 7-1. Â
The Seahawks put up 25 shots with 16 shots compared to the Chargers seven shots with six on target. Wagner earned eight penalty corner opportunities as New Haven had four attempts of its own.Â
The last time the Seahawks put together seven goals in one game came back on September 30, 2022 at Merrimack. Wagner has scored more than seven goals in three separate games since 2019.Â
Next up, the Green & White continues NEC play as the Seahawks travel to Sacred Heart for a matchup with the Pioneers on Friday, September 26. That game is set to begin at 3:00 pm on Johnson Field.
