Women’s Water Polo Defeats Mount St. Mary’s To Advance To MAAC Championship Against Marist

Poughkeepsie, NY – The top-seeded Wagner women's water polo team punched its ticket to the 2025 MAAC Championship game, defeating No. 3 seed Mount St. Mary's, 17-10, in the semifinal round on Saturday afternoon at the McCann Natatorium.

Mount St. Mary's jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first two goals of the game to grab momentum. However, Wagner quickly responded, netting four unanswered goals to seize control. Senior Lizzy Koerper sparked the rally, scoring the Seahawks' first goal of the afternoon. Four different Seahawks scored during the first-quarter surge, helping Wagner close the opening frame with a 5-3 advantage.

The Seahawks extended their lead in the second quarter, outscoring Mount St. Mary's 5-2. Senior Carlota Alonso, the MAAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year, delivered a key goal with just 22 seconds left in the half, sending Wagner into the break with a 10-5 cushion.

Despite a push from the Mountaineers in the third quarter, Wagner maintained its composure, taking a 12-8 lead into the final frame. The Seahawks then came out firing in the fourth, opening the period with four unanswered goals. Sophomore Ana Arias, an All-MAAC Second Team honoree, and junior Magali Ogg, an All-MAAC First Team selection, each scored twice during the decisive run to help Wagner pull away for good.

Wagner closed out the match with a strong defensive effort to secure the 17-10 victory.

With the win, the Seahawks advance to face the top seed from the Blue Division, Marist, in the championship game on Sunday, April 27 at 12:00 PM on ESPN+ at the McCann Natatorium.

Marist, the tournament host, posted an 8-3 record in MAAC play this season and earned a 9-5 semifinal win over Villanova. Wagner defeated Marist 9-8 in last year's championship game and posted a 10-7 victory over the Red Foxes earlier this season on March 7.

The Seahawks are seeking to win back-to-back MAAC Championships for the first time since their historic six-year title streak from 2014 to 2019.
