Brooklyn, NY & Staten Island, NY – The No. 19 Wagner women's water polo team secured its fourth consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season title on Sunday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.
This victory marks the program's 14th regular season championship, with the first title earned in 2004. Of the 14 times the Green & White have claimed the top seed, they have won eight championships. Last season, the Seahawks captured their 11th MAAC Championship and have now won eight of the last 10 MAAC titles.
Over the weekend, the Seahawks recorded two wins in New York, starting with a 17-15 victory over Villanova on Saturday afternoon at LIU's Steinberg Wellness Center Pool. On Sunday, Wagner suffered an 18-13 loss to La Salle but bounced back with a strong 17-12 win over LIU at the Spiro Sports Center.
Prior to the Seahawks game against LIU, nine members of the programs were honored for Senior Day.
Game 1 Results - #19 Wagner 17, Villanova 15
The game began with a bang as Wagner's senior standout, Carlota Alonso, netted two quick goals, followed by a third from sophomore Catherine Mentz, giving the Seahawks an early 3–0 lead. Villanova quickly responded, however, and by the end of the first quarter, the score was deadlocked at 5–5 in an action-packed opening period. Wagner edged ahead in the second quarter, taking an 11–10 lead into halftime after a series of quick counterattacks and clutch saves.
Villanova stayed close throughout the third, but Wagner managed to maintain a narrow advantage, leading 15–13 heading into the final eight minutes. Villanova continued to press in the fourth, closing the gap to just one goal at times, but Wagner's defense stepped up when it mattered most. A key late goal sealed the deal, and Wagner walked away with a hard-fought 17–15 victory.
Game 2 Results - #19 Wagner 13, La Salle 18
The teams opened the game by trading the first eight goals, locking the contest at 4-4. La Salle scored the last two goals of the period to take a 6-4 lead into the second quarter. Wagner struck first in the second, but the Explorers answered with two quick goals to extend their lead to 8-5. The Seahawks didn't back down, responding with two goals of their own to stay in the game. After a few more goals from both sides, the score stood at 10-9, but the Explorers found the net a couple more times taking to a 12-9 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, La Salle outscored Wagner 2-1. The fourth quarter saw La Salle score two critical goals in the first minute, extending their lead to six points at 16-10. Despite Wagner's efforts, they were unable to mount a meaningful comeback, and La Salle sealed the win with an 18-13 final score.
Game 3 Results - #19 Wagner 17, LIU 12
The match began with both teams trading goals, and Wagner managed to hold a slight 5-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was an offensive showcase, with both teams finding the back of the net frequently. By halftime, the score was knotted at 9-9, setting up an exciting second half.
The third quarter saw both teams continue to battle hard, but Wagner held onto a narrow 12-11 lead heading into the final period. In the fourth, Wagner's offense found another gear, and despite a determined effort from LIU, the Seahawks pulled away and secured the 17-12 victory.
Next Up: The Seahawks will wrap up their regular season with a final matchup against Princeton at DeNunzio Pool in Princeton, NJ on Wednesday, April 16.
After facing the Tigers, Wagner will receive a bye in the opening round of the 2025 MAAC Championship. The Seahawks will await the winner of the No. 2 seed from the Blue Division, Iona, and the No. 3 seed from the Red Division, Villanova. That game will take place on Saturday, April 26 at 12:00 PM at McCann Natatorium in Poughkeepsie, NY, hosted by Marist University.
