Women's Water Polo Takes Down Two Ranked Opponents At The Midwest Invite

Bloomington, IN - The No. 22 Wagner women's water polo team defeated two ranked teams, No.16 Michigan, 12-8, and No.14 Indiana, 14-9 this weekend at the Midwest Invite. 

The Seahawks also faced No.2 Stanford, ultimately losing 24-4.

Game 1 Results - #22 Wagner 12, #16 Michigan 8

Michigan jumped out to a strong start, taking an early 3-0 lead. Wagner's only goal of the first half came from sophomore Catherine Mentz, who found the back of the net with 7:45 left in the second quarter. At halftime, the Seahawks trailed 6-1.

Senior Carlota Alonso ignited Wagner's comeback, scoring the first goal of the third quarter. The Seahawks built on that momentum, netting three consecutive goals from junior Magali Ogg and sophomores Ana Arias and Maylen Sampedro Tarela, cutting the deficit to 6-5 with 4:39 remaining in the period. Michigan responded with a goal, but Wagner answered back as graduate student Grace Coleman and Arias each scored to tie the game. The Wolverines regained a one-goal edge, closing the quarter with an 8-7 lead.

Mentz struck again to open the fourth quarter at the 7:29 mark. Senior Casey Taylor followed with a goal, and Alonso added another to push Wagner ahead 10-8 with 5:53 left to play. The Seahawks' defense held firm, shutting out Michigan in the final quarter, while Ogg and Sampedro Tarela each tacked on another goal to secure a 12-8 victory.

With the win, Wagner earned its first-ever victory over Michigan in program history.

Game 2 Results - #22 Wagner 4, #2 Stanford 24

Stanford began this game scoring the first two goals before senior Grace Coleman got the Seahawks on the board. Senior Lizzy Koerper added another goal for Wagner in the first quarter however they trailed 9-2 at the end of the opening frame. Stanford held Wagner scoreless in the second quarter and held a 16-2 lead at the half. 

Wagner could not net a goal in the third quarter and added two in the final quarter but ultimately fell to Stanford, 24-4.

Game 3 Results - #22 Wagner 14, #14 Indiana 9

The Seahawks struck first, and both teams exchanged goals in the opening quarter, tying the game at 2-2. Wagner then took control, outscoring Indiana 5-2 in the period with two goals each from senior Carlota Alonso and sophomore Maylen Sampedro Tarela, along with one from sophomore Catherine Mentz, securing a 7-4 lead at halftime.

Alonso kicked off the second half with another goal for the Green & White, helping Wagner maintain a 10-6 advantage by the end of the third quarter. The Seahawks continued to outpace the Hoosiers in the final period, sealing a 14-9 victory.

The Seahawks will be back in action for the Harvard Invite from March 1-March 2 in Cambridge, MA.
