Women’s Basketball Sweeps Season Series Against Chicago State, 58-52

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's basketball team (7-18, 4-9 NEC) completed the season sweep against Chicago State (4-25, 4-10), 58-52, Saturday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.

Earlier this season, the Seahawks triumphed over the Cougars 85-73 in Chicago, IL, on January 2.

Sophomore Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor led Wagner's charge, recording her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, including four offensive boards. Graduate student Julia Fabozzi contributed 18 points and five rebounds, while graduate student Taleah Washington added 10 points, six assists, and six rebounds to the effort.

With 3:11 left in the first quarter, the Green & White took an 11-3 lead after freshman Keana Foz set up junior Hawa Balde-Camara for a layup. Balde-Camara also had an impressive defensive performance, recording four blocks. By the end of the quarter, Wagner was ahead 17-12.

The Seahawks came out strong in the second, scoring the first two baskets to extend their lead to 30-19 after Fabozzi made two free throws. Wagner's defense stifled Chicago State, limiting them to just 21.43% shooting in the quarter, and the Seahawks went into halftime with a 36-23 advantage.

Wagner kept the pressure on in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 16 points, 46-30, with 3:06 left. They entered the final quarter leading 49-35.

Chicago State mounted a comeback in the fourth, starting with a 13-4 run that cut Wagner's lead to just five points, 53-48, with 4:55 remaining. Despite forcing 24 turnovers, the Seahawks held firm and managed to secure a 58-52 win.

Next up, Wagner will return to action on Thursday, February 27, for the Subway Series, facing off against LIU in their second meeting of the season. In their last encounter on February 6, LIU defeated the Seahawks in a thrilling triple-overtime game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM at the Spiro Sports Center.
