Men's Basketball To Host Stonehill In Penultimate Home Matchup Of Regular Season

The Wagner College men's basketball team will compete its penultimate home game of the 2024-25 campaign against Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent Stonehill on Thursday, February 20. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.

 

Last Time Out

The Seahawks dropped a 72-68 overtime contest to the Le Moyne Dolphins last week on Thursday, February 13 in Syracuse, NY. Down 58-50 with 2:43 remaining, the Seahawks would mount a 12-4, punctuated by a senior Zaire Williams corner three-pointer as time expired to send the contest into overtime, 62-62. Along with Williams, junior R.J. Greene, senior Javier Ezquerra, and graduate student Zae Blake all scored crucial baskets during the final minutes of regulation to grant the Seahawks an opportunity to force overtime. In the second half, the Green & White shot 50% from the field and from beyond-the-arc compared to Le Moyne' 38.1% from the floor and 30% from three-point range. Wagner outscored Le Moyne 44-34 in the second half to force its second overtime game of its season. In overtime, sophomore guard AJ Dancler scored eight of his 17 game points during the frame to help Le Moyne capture its third conference win of the year.

 

Among The NEC 

Since the new year, Williams is tenth in scoring with 14.4 points, fourth in steals with 1.9 per game, fourth in three-pointers made per game with 2.1, and sixth in minutes played with 34.3. Blake ranks first in the NEC in three-point percentage, shooting 19-40 (47.5%) from beyond-the-arc since January 3. Blake is 17th in points per game since the start of the new year with 11.1 and twelfth in the conference in three-pointers made per game at 1.6. Senior Javier Ezquerra ranks in third in assists per game with 4.3 assists across his 12 conference appearances this season. Ezquerra is third in assist-to-turnover ratio with a mark of 2.1 in the category, and 60th nationally with a season-average of 2.41. Junior Keyontae Lewis is sixth in the NEC in offensive rebounds per game, grabbing 2.3 per outing, and tenth overall with six total rebounds per game. Sanchez ranks fourth in the NEC in free throw percentage with a success rate of 85.7% on 30-35 shooting. Since January 3, the Seahawks are second in the conference in three-point percentage with a success rate of 35% on a 84-240 clip.

 

Wagner DNA

Since December 4, Wagner has ranked in the top 10 in scoring defensive out of 355 Division I teams. At their peak, the Seahawks were ranked third in the category. Currently, the Green & White allow the seventh least points per game in the country at a tune of 61.4 points per game, trailing ACC member Duke by 0.6 points per game. The Green & White sit atop the NEC in three-point percentage, shooting 35.4% from beyond-the-arc as a team. Williams is 67th in the nation in steals per game with 1.90 steals per game.

 

It Takes A Village

Wagner is 65th in the nation in bench points per game, averaging 25.1 points from non-starters on any given night.

 

Crashing The Glass

The Seahawks lead the NEC in offensive rebounds per game, grabbing 11 per contest. The Seahawks also lead the conference in offensive rebound percentage, grabbing an offensive rebound on 32.5% of shot attempts. At a margin of +5.1, Wagner ranks 46th nationally in rebound margin.

 

The Series

Wagner is 2-3 all-time against Stonehill since the two programs first matched up in the 2022-23 season. The Skyhawks hold a two-game winning streak over the Seahawks, with both wins coming in Merkert Gymnasium. In the five all-time games between Wagner and Stonehill, the home team has emerged victorious in all five meetings. Most recently, the Skyhawks defeated the Seahawks by a score of 73-61 back on January 30. Sophomore forward Todd Brogna scored 28 points in the lone Wagner-Stonehill game of the season. Williams led the Seahawks' offensive attack with 12 points, scoring double-digits for the tenth consecutive game. Lewis followed closely with 11 points and three rebounds. Kelton finished with nine points as Sanchez and Blake scored eight each.

 

Scouting The Skyhawks

Stonehill comes into Thursday's game with a 14-13 overall record and a 6-6 mark in NEC play. The Skyhawks are riding a two-game winning streak, defeating SFU and Mercyhurst. Stonehill began its regular season 6-0 at home, suffering its first loss in Merkert Gymnasium to LIU on January 10. On the road, Stonehill possesses a 3-9 record away from Easton, MA. Stonehill has three players scoring above 12 points per game - Todd Brogna (12.8), Louie Semona (12.6), and Josh Morgan (12.3). Sophomore forward Louie Semona scored 30 points last time out against the Lakers.
